Surge

Dear colleagues,

In the second edition of the Surge newsletter, we take you through our live projects including data scientist training program, digital plant manual and project Insight. We also bring to you the latest digitalization updates from Gajraula, Nira and Bharuch and shine a light on the people behind this transformation in Humans of Surge. At the end, we offer a brand-new digital tip you can use.

Updates from our sites:

Location: Gajraula

  • We ran an ideation session inviting new ideas for the Surge digitalisation effort from different departments. It covered ideas from process, utility, etc. Subsequently, investment, savings and other requirements for implementing ideas were discussed with respective owners.
  • The recently launched Online Plant Digital Manual system is up and running. A demo was conducted for plant teams for ensuring adoption.
  • A session with Boiler OEM, Subject Matter Experts and plant teams was conducted for verification of hypothesis/ Initiatives to improve boiler efficiency.
  • To further optimize our yield in ACH-6, additional sampling of 675 were collected for deep dive analysis.

Location: Nira

  • Efforts as part of Project Surge are helping improve yield at our AC2O plant from ~98% to ~99%. Latest updates on the project are:
    • Hypothesis-backed trials are underway for improvement of acetic acid norms from 1.204 to 1.200. The team is working to maintain this norm.
    • Mass flowmeters and improved connectivity with DCS have been installed for better monitoring, control flow and collecting granular level data at the plant.
  • At our Biogas plant BD-II an auto flare system has been installed to enhance safety and ensure quick operations.
  • As we move to establish industrial internet of things and cloud computing technology at our sites, we are installing a VLAN (virtual local area network) and data diodes. Both will help monitoring and ensure secure transfer of data across the site. The installation of data diodes is already in progress in AC2O-I, AC2O-II , EA-I & EA-III/IV plants.

Location: Bharuch

  • Bharuch is swiftly working on more ideas of digitalization. The site has already contributed 65 ideas through the SANKALP platform, which are increasing with every passing day. Idea generation and brainstorming sessions were also conducted by external experts recently, leading to new initiatives in the pipeline.
  • We have successfully completed the first trial for P2E yield improvement where oil temperature was maintained at ~180 C in the furnace, helping reduce monthly norms from 1.38 to 1.33 kg/kg of RM-1.
