Traveller: Yashank Sharma, Senior Executive - Legal
Recently, I went to hill station Dhanaulti in Uttrakhand, India with my family, which is 70 km far from Dehradun city. If you are a nature lover then you will definitely like that place. It is completely lush green area with not so much of population.
The climate in Dhanaulti stays cool during the year and especially in winter season when snow fall happens. There are not much of sightseen in Dhanaulti, there are two Eco garden to enjoy with kids and family. There is one major thing to explore which is situated approx 6 km away from Dhanaulti i.e. The Surkanda Devi Temple, so it’s a Shakti Peeth amongs 51 Shakti Peeth. It is at an altitude of about 2756 meters. There are two ways to go to the temple (i) Rope way system and (ii) Trekking towards temple. It is surrounded by dense forests and affords a scenic view of the surrounding region including the Himalayas to the north, and certain cities to the south (e.g., Dehradun, Rishikesh) The Ganga Dusshera festival is celebrated every year between May and June and attracts a lot of people. This is a temple which is situated among the trees. It is covered with fog most of the time of the year.
The history of this temple is when Shiva was passing over this place on his way back to Kailash carrying Sati's body, her head fell at this spot where the modern temple of Sarkunda Devi or Surkhanda Devi stands and due to which the temple's got its name as sirkhanda which in the passage of time is now called sarkunda.
